“Eco-Safe driving is recognised and proven style of driving that contributes to road safety whilst reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
From September 10, 2008 an assessment will be made of a test candidates ability to drive in a way that demonstrates recognition of the principals of Eco-Safe Driving.
Candidates who take a driving test will receive feedback on their eco-safe driving skills as part of the debrief at the end of the test. They will also receive a foldout leaflet containing more detailed information to help them to drive in an ecologically friendly manner.” (source DSA Despatch June 2008)
There are two factors that will be taken into account when assessing your Eco-Safe Driving Skills these two factors are Control and Planning
Control
Always try to use the vehicle controls as smoothly as possible and you should pay particular attention to : -
• Starting and moving away
• The way in which you accelerate
• Using your gears correctly
• Driving at appropriate speed
These factors reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and will help in reducing CO2
Planning
It is possible to reduce harmful emissions by anticipating road and traffic conditions, acting in good time rather than reacting to them at the last moment. You should be able to show:
• Showing good hazard awareness and planning
• Making good use of engine breaking
• Stopping the engine when appropriate
Craig & Philip are both Fleet Registered Instructors and as such are well placed
to offer sound advice when it comes to demonstrating ECO-safe Driving skills.
If your instructor is teaching to use the gears for slowing down or suggesting you
use a gear higher than 3rd when driving at 30mph then these are not ECO-safe driving
methods.
