Q - How would you check the brakes work before a journey?
A - Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Test them as you set off; the car should not pull to one side.
Q - Where is the tyre pressure info and how do you check it?
A - Use the manufacturer’s guide. Use a reliable pressure gauge, check when tyres are cold, check the spare, and refit valve caps.
Q - How should the head restraint be correctly adjusted?
A - The rigid part should be at least as high as the eyes/top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as comfortable.
Q - How do you check tyres for tread depth and safety?
A - No cuts or bulges. Minimum 1.6mm tread depth across the central 3/4 of the breadth and around the entire circumference.
Q - How do you check the headlights and tail lights work?
A - Turn on the ignition/switch, then explain you would walk around the vehicle to check.
Q - How would you know if there is a problem with the ABS?
A - The ABS warning light on the dashboard would stay illuminated if there is a fault.
Q - How do you check the direction indicators work?
A - Operate the switch (or hazard lights) and walk around the vehicle to check.
Q - How do you check the brake lights work?
A - Operate the brake pedal and use reflections in windows/doors or ask someone to help check.
Q - How do you check the power steering works?
A - If steering is heavy, it’s not working. Check by applying gentle pressure on the wheel while starting the engine, or turning the wheel just after moving off.
Q - How do you turn on rear fog lights and when?
A - Operate the switch (dipped beams must be on). Check for the warning light. Use when visibility is under 100 metres.
Q - How do you switch to main beam and know it's on?
A - Operate the switch (with ignition on) and check for the blue main beam warning light.
Q - Open the bonnet: how do you check the engine oil?
A - Identify dipstick. Explain you'd wipe it, dip it, and check the level against the min/max markers.
Q - Open the bonnet: how do you check the coolant?
A - Identify the high/low markings on the header tank and explain how to top it up.
Q - Open the bonnet: how do you check the brake fluid?
A - Identify the reservoir and check the level against the high/low markings.
The examiner will ask one of these when they deem it safe. You must perform the task while maintaining control of the car.
